She started selling hand-poured soy candles on Etsy in 2022. Two years in, she had a steady $2,800/month in sales, ~700 reviews, and a real following.

She was also paying Etsy ~$580/month in fees. And her business didn't appear on Google once — every sale was inside Etsy's walled garden.

The shift

She DM'd ‘MOCKUP’ on Instagram. Within 48 hours, we sent her an interactive mockup of her own site — same brand, same products, but on a domain she owned.

What changed in 90 days

  • Direct sales: $4,100/month. (Up from $2,800 Etsy, less Etsy fees.)
  • Google impressions: 12,400/month. (Was 0.)
  • Email list: 380 subscribers. (Was 0 — Etsy owns the customer list.)
  • Repeat customers: 22%. (Up from 11% on Etsy.)

Why it worked

Three things, mostly:

  1. She ranked on Google. "Hand-poured soy candles Brooklyn" — that didn't exist as a search before. Now it does, and she owns the result.
  2. She owned the customer list. She started sending a monthly email. Repeat purchases jumped.
  3. She kept 97.5% of every sale. The math finally worked.

Her Etsy shop is still open. But most of her business is on her own site now. That's the point.
